Blanket Series

In the early 1800s trade with the whalers and early settlers in New Zealand created a demand for woolen blankets.  By the 1840s traders and the crown were trading blankets, muskets and other goods for land, food, flax and many precious taonga.  Along with Victorian clothing and hats (vehemently supported by the missionaries), the blanket became part of a fashion era in which “cross over” dressing was the norm and, as with all good fashion, an individual style statement.  My “Blanket Series” is inspired by that changeable time.
With the traditionally woven feathers, muka, lace bark or cylindrical flax tag I represent the Korowai, piupiu, or maro worn with the blanket.  The Perspex adds a visual depth and gives a feeling of separation between the old and new ideas of adornment and clothing.
